Success Stories

Youth turning waste into opportunity

"In Lusaka’s peri-urban communities of George, Mandevu, and Chawama, youth unemployment and poor sanitation have long gone hand in hand. Through our youth entrepreneurship programme, we have supported 16 youth groups to transform these challenges into opportunity. One group, once struggling to find stable income, now runs a community-based waste collection and recycling business that not only generates livelihoods but also improves sanitation in their neighborhood. Their work has reduced uncollected waste, created jobs for young people and restored a sense of dignity and purpose. What began as a small grant has evolved into a sustainable enterprise, demonstrating how youth-led solutions can drive both economic and environmental change."

Nyankanga Community Foundation redefining funding models

"The Nyankanga Community Foundation made history as the first recipient of funding through Zambia’s pioneering Reverse Call for Proposals. Instead of responding to donor-driven priorities, the community led the process—identifying their own needs, designing their own solutions, and making the case for support on their own terms. With K170,000 secured, Nyankanga is now implementing locally designed initiatives that directly respond to community challenges. This milestone represents a powerful shift in the development landscape, proving that when communities are trusted and resourced, they can lead transformative change with clarity, ownership, and accountability."

Strengthening civil society for greater impact

"Through our Catalyst Fund initiative of the Shifting the Power programme, we empowered 25 emerging civil society organisations (CSOs) to grow into more effective and resilient actors. One such organisation was Elichi Greens, which entered our programme with a strong vision but limited systems and reach. Over six months, they received not only financial support but also tailored capacity strengthening in governance, financial management, and programme delivery. Today, they are engaging more communities, attracting new partnerships, and delivering higher-quality interventions. This transformation illustrates how investing in the backbone of civil society unlocks long-term impact, ensuring that local organizations can sustain and scale their work."
